i need a new theme
I need a new theme, because the one I’m using is generic and terrible. Unfortunately, all the smart guys I know are busy being lawyers and other income-heavy/theme-designing-light occupations. So I rely on you, the anonymous.
Any suggestions?

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the most ‘radical speech’ an American ex-President has ever delivered.
Now, this means that our government, national and State, must be freed from the sinister influence or control of special interests. Exactly as the special interests of cotton and slavery threatened our political integrity before the Civil War, so now the great special...

Just about the last thing I wanted to give any thought to this morning was some asshole throwing puppies into a river. Honestly. I made a list before leaving the apartment, and “some asshole throwing puppies into a river” was waaaay down towards the bottom. And then, boom.

“Here’s the deal. Most any other species, you’d have been dead long ago. Ever heard of Charles Darwin?”
Mosquitoes tickled Snapper’s eyelids as he nodded his head.
“Good,” Skink said. “Then you might understand what’s about to happen.” He turned to the others. “Somebody tell Mister Lester Maddow Parsons where we are.”
Augustine said: “Crocodile Lakes.”
“Yes indeedy,” Skink...

this is where i was
So what was meant to be a weekend back in the hometown celebrating an old friend’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary turned into a near-week stranded waiting for the car we were driving to be repaired. Why waiting? Because the car was always a day away from being fixed and who wants to go all the way back to get the car? It was nice and all, being back in the home town, though it was...

I’m pretty sure they left out Rum, Sodomy and the Lash….
They also left out Internet memes from two years ago rewritten as “fresh articles” by major media outlets. Unfortunately, that one shows no sign of dying out.
One thing kids ten years from now will never experience: articles formatted as slideshows to maximize clicks.

What the hell is Reason’s Katherine Mangu-Ward doing promoting this pro-high fructose corn syrup inanity from Richard Berman’s “Center for Consumer Freedom”? I mean, jesus, THE MARKET didn’t make HFCS omnipresent! Rational consumers didn’t decide they loved the fucking taste of HFCS way more…

You know, back in my day (which was, uh, 2004) I bought a Death Cab for Cutie reissue for twelve bucks, and that first Mars Volta 2xLP, a picture disc even, for nineteen (both of which I no longer have). The other day I went to a store to browse and there was literally no new LP under 18 dollars,…
And oddly enough, remember when a movie ticket cost roughly half of what a new album/CD?...
first rule: no chair fights in the comments thread
So instead I’ll comment here:
I think the only thing that will save us, the non-wealthy, is if we sequentially target all the other non-wealthy who managed at some point to use “freedom of contract” to negotiate themselves a viable wage. Because obviously if there are some people marginally better off than we are, then it is their fault that we’re in this mess and their...

Lost in all the Insha’Allabaloo of the last couple days was a post by noted doomsday theorist Peter Feld. YM is officially on board with the view that the planet (or humanity as we know it) is fucked beyond repair, shelf life of 200 years max. What are the practical implications of this? Who knows, but keep on blogging.
There is a lot of cataclysm bouncing around today.

Having a little bit of a too much information day. Not like, I didn’t want to know that about you (though that’s in the air), but like, that’s a bit of information that I should acquaint myself with once I’m done doing all the stuff I’m late to do. Oh look, another one. What was that last one? Right.
