I finally saw “Inception”! Well, the first hour of it. I’m trying to remember if it was Leo or Ellen Page that made me nod off. Maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s forehead? But my question is: do I have to go back and watch the ending to understand all the “Inception” memes?

Rich Lowry on the anti-science “smear” of Rick Perry: Unless [Perry] has an interest in paleontology that has escaped everyone’s notice to this point, Perry’s somewhat doubtful take on evolution has more to do with a general impulse to preserve a role for God in creation than a careful evaluation of the work of, say, Stephen Jay Gould. Perry’s attitude is in the American...

In this part of Brooklyn, we dodged a bullet. I ran into a neighbor just now, and he was all like, “Meteorologists are all just melodramatic.” Actually, neighbor, no. They don’t predict what will happen, but what can happen. If Irene had held to a more northward course instead of ticking to the east (i.e., if the eye had crossed to the west of the city and not the east), then...

Should be sleeping! Mild leak in bedroom ceiling (expected), buckets out. Went down to the lobby in case anyone else was up, restless. Doorman napping. I did not wake him. Dying to see what it looks like outside. When does daylight come? 6pm?

It’s not just rain, it’s HURRICANE RAIN. Wondering if I’m supposed to sleep or not.

OK, I delivered a small terrine of the pate (sic) to the bar. They were thankful! and totally slammed. This specific part of Flatbush has their priorities, if not straight, mindful. No slashing rain yet, so the furled umbrella I’ve been carrying around makes me feel like Gene Kelly. But I will say that this maybe-cataclysm is bringing out the awesome in everyone, including my never-met...

Just finally made the chicken liver pate (sic) that I’ve been meaning to. It’s in the fridge solidifying, but I think I’ve found my calling. Also, there’s supposed to be a hurricane later.

Nothing has changed, except that I am more fully provisioned. Everyone on Cortelyou is very collegial. I have seen two folk, on the older side, who seemed genuinely terrified. I tried my best to calm them down. The bakery was out of loaves, so I went to the Mexican bakery, where the bread is much better anyone (though not in loaf form). Lesson learned! When anyone out here ends a conversation,...

Groceries here in Ditmas are relatively sedate — about as busy as they would be at 6pm on a weekday — and I didn’t notice any obvious shortages. Though it does seem that suppliers are trying to do a weekend’s worth of deliveries in one morning, because there are trucks loading in milk, bread, meat everywhere. Have also decided that a key move is to park the car not under a...

So here at the office we are methodically de-hurricanizing all of the exterior offices. (Which is basically all the office.)  Moving stuff into a central, windowless room. Unplugging the electronics. Etc. THIS IS WEIRD.

Well, my apartment is apparently safe according to the NYC evacuation map, but all my friends in Red Hook would have a go of it, as would, apparently, my office. These things never turn into anything up here, of course, but it’s fun to pretend that you’re a Floridian for a moment.
